AI visibility: being named in the answer, not just the results

Assistants answer a question and cite a few sources. AI visibility measures how often yours is one of them — what it means, how to track it without fooling yourself, and what actually moves the number.

definition

AI visibility is the degree to which an AI assistant names or cites your site when answering questions in your subject area, measured across a fixed set of queries rather than as a single ranking position.

What AI visibility is in practice

AI visibility is a rate, not a rank. You pick a set of questions a buyer would actually type into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, ask each one on a schedule, and record whether your site is named or linked in the answer. The output is the percentage of queries where you appear, plus a record of which sites appeared instead.

That differs from a keyword position in three ways. There is no stable list of ten results, so "position four" has no meaning: an answer either names you or it does not. The answer is assembled from passages, so a page can be cited for one paragraph while the rest is ignored. And two people asking the same question can be shown different sources, which is why a single probe is noise and a repeated probe over weeks is a signal.

Measuring it well means owning three things: the query set, the cadence, and the stored answer text, so you can see who took the slot rather than only that you slipped.

in one sentence

AI visibility is a rate, not a rank: the share of a fixed question set where an assistant names your site, read as a trend over weeks rather than as a position on a given day.

Why the number matters

Assistants answer in front of the click. Someone asking which PoE camera suits a small warehouse gets a written answer with a short list of cited sources, and the sites named there are the ones that get considered. If Search Console is your only instrument, you see the clicks that survived, not the questions that were answered without you.

Two consequences follow for anyone doing this work.

  • Traffic and visibility can move apart. Clicks can fall in a week when your brand is named more often, or hold steady while assistants settle on a competitor as the source they quote.
  • The failure is silent. A page that is never cited leaves no trace to investigate: no impression, no lost position, no error to chase. Absence looks exactly like a quiet week.

Neither effect shows up in a rank tracker, which is why AI visibility is worth tracking as its own number rather than as a footnote under organic sessions. Answer engine optimisation is the work; this is the measurement.

How we measure it, and its limits

The nightly loop that refreshes decaying articles also takes this reading. Each site is scored against its own fixed list of questions, because the queries that matter to a CCTV wholesaler have nothing in common with those that matter to a developer-tools site. The run puts those questions to GPT and Perplexity, records whether the site was named, and files the result next to Search Console clicks and impressions for the same period.

Two honest caveats. First, a probe only measures page visibility if the assistant actually searches the web during the run. A model answering from memory is reporting brand fame, which is a different property and moves far more slowly. Second, the reading is lumpy on a short question list, so an early run of zeros is ordinary for a site the index has barely seen, and is not on its own evidence that something is broken.

You can run the same style of probe on your own domain with the free AI Visibility Checker.

What moves it

Be retrievable. Assistants that browse start from a search index. If robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, or your main content only appears once JavaScript runs, nothing downstream matters. The free AI Crawler Check settles the first half of that in a minute.

Answer in one sentence. A page that states its answer plainly near the top can be lifted whole. A page that reaches its conclusion in paragraph nine loses the slot to one that does not.

Carry something only you have. Product specifications, datasheet figures and support questions are the material an assistant cannot find on four other sites, which is why grounding a page in first-party data is the part competitors cannot copy quickly.

Cover the question, not the topic. Visibility is earned per question, so a gap in your query set is usually a missing page rather than a weak one.

None of this is instant. A new page has to be crawled and indexed before it can be cited at all.

Common misunderstandings

That it is a ranking you can climb. There is no position to hold. The workable target is the share of your query set where you are named, read as a trend over weeks.

That one check tells you something. Assistants sample. Two identical prompts can return different sources, so any single result, good or bad, is noise until it repeats.

That publishing more raises it automatically. Volume without a reason to be cited raises page count, not citation rate. Pages get lifted when they answer a specific question in a clean, checkable sentence.

That it replaces classic search work. Most assistants that browse retrieve from a search index first, so being crawlable and indexed remains the entry ticket rather than an optional extra.

That the number belongs to the whole site. Visibility is earned per question. A site can be the default source on installation questions and invisible on pricing questions in the same week.

questions people ask

How is AI visibility different from keyword rankings?

A ranking is a position in a list of links. AI visibility is whether an assistant names your site inside a written answer, where there is no fourth place: you are cited or you are not. The measurement is also probabilistic, because the same question asked twice can return different sources. The honest unit is therefore the share of a fixed query set where you appear, tracked across several weeks, rather than a position recorded on a single day.

How do you measure AI visibility?

Write down the questions a buyer would really ask, spanning early research through to the point of purchase. Put each one to the assistants your buyers use on a fixed schedule, and record two things: whether your domain was named or linked, and the full answer text. The share of questions where you appear is your visibility rate, and the stored answers show which sites took the slot instead. Check that the assistant searched the web during the run, or you are measuring brand recall.

Can you improve AI visibility without publishing more content?

Often, yes. The first gains usually come from removing obstacles rather than adding pages. Confirm that AI crawlers are allowed in robots.txt, that your main content renders without JavaScript, and that each page answers its question in a plain sentence near the top rather than in the fourth paragraph. A clear definition, a visible review date and valid structured data all make a page easier to quote. Writing pages for questions you have no page for comes after that, not before.

How long does a change take to show up?

Expect weeks rather than days. Assistants that browse retrieve from a search index, so a new page must be crawled and indexed before it can be cited, and the answers themselves vary from run to run. A weekly reading on an unchanged query set, read as a trend over a couple of months, is the practical approach. Sharp single-week swings are usually sampling. If nothing moves once the pages are indexed and the wait is over, the pages are the problem.
