Novelty score: how much a page adds over what already ranks
A judge model reads your draft next to the pages already ranking and rates what it adds. Score too low and the draft goes back for a revision round rather than publishing as one more version of the consensus.
A novelty score measures how much new information a draft contributes compared with the pages already ranking for its target keyword, and is used as a pass-or-fail gate before that draft is allowed to publish.

What a novelty score measures in practice
A novelty score comes from a judge model that reads two things: the draft, and the pages currently ranking for the target keyword.
It is not a string comparison. The question is not whether sentences match. It is whether the draft carries information a reader could not get from the competitor set.
What raises the score:
- A specification, tolerance or part number from data the competitors do not hold.
- A procedure written in the order the work is actually done.
- A failure mode, plus the conditions that produce it.
- A number with its source and the date it was checked.
What does not raise it: a fresh introduction, synonym swaps, more subheadings, a longer word count, or the same ten points in a different order.
The output is a number with reasons attached. Used as a gate it needs a threshold. Below that line the draft goes back for a revision round with the overlapping passages named, rather than shipping as another copy of what already ranks.
Why novelty scoring matters in 2026
Two things happened at once. Producing a competent long-form page on any keyword became close to free, and the systems that rank and quote pages got better at ignoring the tenth competent page on a subject.
There is no ranking reason to promote a page that restates the results above it, and no citation reason for an assistant to quote one. Assistants quote passages, not domains: a sentence carrying a number, a condition or a caveat. A page that paraphrases the consensus offers nothing to lift, because the consensus already sits inside the model.
Google's helpful content guidance asks a similar question in plainer words — does this page exist because someone had something to say, or because the keyword had volume?
Novelty scoring is the closest thing to a measurable answer before publication. It will not tell you a page is good. It will tell you a page is redundant, which is the defect that mass-produced content carries most often.
A novelty score answers one question: would a reader who has already read the top ten results learn anything from this page? If the answer is no, rewriting the wording does not change it.
How IT Master scores novelty
Novelty is one of four checks in the validation gauntlet, beside fact-check, E-E-A-T critique and AI-tell detection. Claude models write; the novelty score comes from a judge at a different vendor — Gemini or GPT — reading the draft against the competitor pages captured during research, because the model that writes is never the model that checks (cross-model validation). A draft under the threshold goes back with its overlapping sections named, for up to three revision rounds.
The honest limit: a novelty score is a judgement, not a proof. It depends on which competitor pages the research stage captured, and two judges can grade the same draft differently. It filters redundancy; it does not certify quality.
What moves the number is having something to say. That is why articles are grounded in the customer's own first-party data — product records, datasheets, support questions — wherever it exists.
Across 186 Standard-tier runs, 51% of drafts passed every check first time; the rest were revised or rejected. Pro-tier judges are stricter: 25% first-pass, across a small sample of 16 runs. How it works walks the full pipeline.
Common misunderstandings
It is not a plagiarism check. Plagiarism tools compare strings. A draft can be entirely original text and still score badly, because it makes the same points in different words.
It does not demand unheard-of claims. Novelty is marginal contribution for one query, not originality in the abstract. A well-known fact stated precisely, with the condition under which it holds, can carry a page.
Length is not novelty. Padding lowers the ratio of new information to words, and the judge reads the whole draft.
A high score is not accuracy. The most novel thing a model can produce is an invented specification. That is why novelty is scored alongside a fact-check from a different vendor, never instead of one.
The score is relative, and it moves. It is measured against the pages ranking today. When a competitor publishes something better, an article that cleared the bar last year drifts towards redundant — which is a case for a content refresh, not another new page.
questions people ask
What is a novelty score?
A novelty score measures how much a draft adds over the pages already ranking for its keyword. A judge model reads the draft alongside the competitor set and rates the information the draft carries that the competitors do not: a specification, a procedure, a failure mode, a number with a date on it. Rewording, reordering and extra length do not count. Used as a publishing gate, the score has a threshold. Drafts underneath it go back with the overlapping passages named, rather than publishing as another version of what already exists.
How is a novelty score different from a plagiarism check?
A plagiarism check compares strings and answers a copyright question: did this text come from somewhere else? A novelty score compares meaning and answers an editorial one: does this page give a reader anything the top results do not? The two disagree often. A draft can pass every plagiarism tool with completely original wording and still score near zero for novelty, because it makes the same ten points as everybody else. Only the second question predicts whether the page earns a ranking or a citation.
How do you raise a low novelty score?
Add information the competitors could not have. In practice that means first-party material: your own product records, datasheets, installation notes, returns data and the questions customers actually ask your support team. Specifics beat adjectives — a tolerance, a part number, a failure mode with the conditions that cause it, a price with the date it was checked. Cutting helps too, because padding dilutes what is new. What does not work is rewriting the introduction, swapping synonyms or adding subheadings; the judge reads for content, not arrangement.
Does a high novelty score mean the article will rank?
No. Novelty removes one reason a page gets ignored; it does not supply the others. A page still needs real search demand behind the keyword, internal links from related pages, a site with some authority, and to be indexed at all. Novelty is a filter against redundancy, applied before publication, and it is a model's judgement rather than a proof. Treat a passing score as permission to publish, not as a forecast.
