Programmatic SEO, and the point where scale stops helping
Take a dataset, a template and a URL pattern, and one build can publish thousands of pages. The technique is older than language models and still works. What fills the template decides whether it earns traffic or gets dropped.
Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating many search-targeted pages from a data source and one shared template, one page per row, so a site covers a large set of related queries without hand-writing each page.

What programmatic SEO looks like in practice
Programmatic SEO starts with a table, not a keyword. One row per town, per product, per integration, per model number. A template turns each row into a page at a predictable URL, and the whole set ships in a single build.
The parts are always the same:
- A dataset with enough columns to make each row genuinely different: specifications, price bands, opening hours, compatibility, local rules.
- A template that gives every field a place to sit and still reads as a page rather than a form.
- A URL pattern, such as /cctv-installers/{town} or /integrations/{platform}, with one canonical URL per row.
- An internal-link plan so the pages reach each other and a hub page reaches all of them.
- A publishing rule that decides which rows deserve a page at all.
The familiar examples are directory-shaped: one page per app pairing on an automation tool, one per route on a travel site, one per model comparison in a catalogue.
The last part is the one teams skip. A row with three thin columns produces a thin page, and shipping it anyway is how a site ends up with ten thousand URLs and one that ranks.
A programmatic page earns its place when the row behind it carries a fact the other results do not have. If the row is thin, the page is thin, however the template is worded.
Why it matters in 2026
Two things changed, and they pull against each other.
Producing pages got cheap. A model and a spreadsheet can fill a template thousands of times before lunch, so the constraint moved from writing capacity to judgement about what deserves to exist.
Getting those pages counted got harder. Large sites are crawled far more than they are indexed, and Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse — pages produced in bulk mainly to win rankings rather than to help a reader — regardless of whether a person, a script or a model made them. The arithmetic gets worse as the set grows: a wall of near-identical URLs teaches a crawler to come back slowly, which crawl budget covers in detail.
Answer engines apply a third test. When an assistant answers a question it lifts passages carrying a specific, checkable fact. The result is that programmatic SEO is no longer a volume play. It is a data quality play that happens to produce volume.
How IT Master handles page volume

Five things people get wrong
"Programmatic means AI-written." The two are unrelated. A pSEO set can be built from a database with no model involved, and a hand-written article can be as generic as any template.
"More pages, more traffic." Publishing is not indexing. Search engines keep a fraction of what they crawl on a large site, and the pages they drop are usually the ones repeating each other.
"Unique means differently worded." Rewording is not information. The uniqueness that counts is a fact on your page that is absent from the other ten results: a specification, a price band, a failure mode, an answer from your own support queue.
"Set it and forget it." Data ages. Stock, prices, regulations and model numbers move, and a page that was right in March and wrong in September is worse than no page. Something has to re-check and refresh it, which is one of the jobs SEO automation can genuinely take off your desk.
"A canonical tag will sort out the duplicates." Canonicals decide which URL to keep. They do not turn a thin page into a useful one. If you are unsure which category your set falls into, run the site check.

Is programmatic SEO against Google's guidelines?
No. The method is neutral and the output is what gets judged. Search engine spam policies target scaled content abuse, meaning pages made in bulk primarily to win rankings rather than to help a reader, and the same test applies whether a person, a script or a model produced them. A set built from real data that answers a real question sits outside that. A set that swaps a town name into the same eight paragraphs does not, and no canonical tag, disclosure or word-count target changes the verdict.
How many pages does it take to count as programmatic SEO?
There is no threshold. It is programmatic when the pages come from a data source and a shared template rather than being written one at a time, whether that means forty pages or forty thousand. Scale changes the risks, not the definition. Below a few hundred pages you can still read every one. Above that you need rules deciding which rows deserve a page, a way to detect near-duplicates, and something that refreshes stale fields. Most trouble blamed on programmatic SEO is really the absence of those three rules.
What data can you build programmatic pages from?
Anything structured that a buyer actually searches: product specifications, compatibility pairs, service locations, price bands, regulations by region, model comparisons, and the questions your support queue answers every week. First-party data is the strongest source because it sits on no other site, so a retailer's own stock, datasheets and returns notes carry detail competitors cannot copy. Public datasets work too, but everyone can reach them, so those pages have to add interpretation. If a row cannot support one genuinely useful paragraph, it should not become a page.
Is programmatic SEO still worth doing in 2026?
Yes, where the data earns it. Query patterns that repeat across a set, one per town, one per integration, one per model number, are still best served by a page each, because the person searching wants a specific answer rather than a general guide. What has stopped working is the version where the data is thin and the template does the heavy lifting. The test takes a minute: read one page with the variable fields removed.
