What LLM SEO means, and what it changes

Assistants answer questions by quoting a few pages. LLM SEO is the work that decides whether one of them is yours. The definition, the mechanism behind it, and the parts people get wrong.

definition

LLM SEO is the practice of writing and structuring pages so that a large language model retrieves them, trusts them and quotes them in its answer, with your domain named as the source.

What LLM SEO is in practice

In practice, LLM SEO is three jobs done in order.

Get fetched. An assistant answering a live question rewrites it into several narrower search queries, pulls the results, and fetches a handful of pages. Nothing you wrote matters if your page is not in that set, so crawler access and ordinary ranking for the sub-questions come first.

Get quoted. Retrieval works on passages, not whole pages. A section with its own heading and a complete answer inside it stands on its own; prose that leans on the paragraph above does not. Put the conclusion in the first sentence, define each term in one sentence, and keep the numbers in the sentence rather than inside an image.

Get attributed. Models prefer sources they can name: a byline, an organisation, a date, and a claim that is not already stated on every other page in the results. First-party data is the strongest version of that, because a model that wants your specification, measurement or support answer has to point at you.

The longer treatment of each step is in the LLM SEO guide.

LLM SEO is three jobs in order: be fetched by the assistant's crawler, be quotable at passage level, and be attributable to a named source.

Why it matters in 2026

Two changes made this its own discipline. Search results now carry a generated answer above the links, and a growing share of research questions never reach a results page at all: they are asked directly of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot. In both cases the reader gets a synthesis with a short list of cited sources attached.

That changes the unit of success. A ranked list spreads clicks across a page of results. A generated answer hands the citation to a few pages and gives the rest nothing, so the gap between being cited and being ignored is wider than the gap between position three and position eight.

It also changes what you measure. Rankings have a position; citations have a rate, meaning the share of your chosen questions for which an assistant names your domain. Measure weekly, against a fixed question set, in the assistant's web-search mode. A bare model with retrieval switched off is reporting how well known your brand was during training, not how good your pages are. The free AI Visibility Checker takes that reading for you.

A ranked list spreads clicks across a page of results. A generated answer names a short list of sources and ignores the rest, which is why citation rate is its own metric.

How IT Master handles LLM SEO

IT Master is an autonomous SEO content engine, so this is not a service bolted on the side; it is how the pipeline is built.

Topics come from real search demand, using DataForSEO plus your own Search Console, rather than a brainstorm. Research reads the competing pages, forums and, where it exists, your first-party data: product records, datasheets, support Q&A. A Claude model writes the draft. Models from a different vendor, Gemini and GPT, then run the checks: fact-check, novelty against the competitors, an E-E-A-T critique and AI-tell detection, with up to three revision rounds. The model that writes is never the model that checks.

What passes publishes to your site with JSON-LD schema, internal links, a hero image and an FAQ block, and IndexNow pings the search engines. A nightly loop refreshes decaying pages and records Search Console performance alongside GPT and Perplexity citations.

Across 186 Standard-tier runs, 51% of drafts passed every check first time; the rest were revised or rejected. You pay per published article, see pricing, and a draft that fails the checks is not charged at the full rate. The full flow is on how it works.

in one sentence

The validation gauntlet is the gate: a Claude model writes, Gemini and GPT judges check facts, novelty, E-E-A-T and AI tells, and only a passing draft publishes.

Common misunderstandings

That it replaces SEO. Assistants that browse the web start from a search index. If you do not rank for the narrow queries the model issues, you are not in the candidate set, so indexation, technical health and topical coverage still do the first half of the job.

That schema earns citations. JSON-LD does not make a model quote you. It removes ambiguity about who wrote the page and when. Markup that disagrees with the visible page, such as a June dateModified under a January byline, costs you trust rather than earning it.

That blocking AI crawlers protects you. It removes you from the answers. The major vendors run separate agents for training crawls and for search-time fetches, so you can refuse one and stay in the other. An old blanket robots.txt rule is a common cause of an unexplained zero; the AI Crawler Check reads yours and reports what is blocked.

That one visibility score means something. The same question asked twice can return different sources. A single run is one sample. A weekly series against a fixed question set is evidence.

in one sentence

Blocking every unfamiliar crawler does not protect a site from AI; it removes the site from AI answers. The major vendors use separate user agents for training crawls and search-time fetches.

questions people ask

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is the practice of writing and structuring pages so a large language model retrieves them, trusts them and quotes them when it answers a question, with your domain named as the source. It covers three things: crawler access and ranking for the narrow queries an assistant issues, passages that can be lifted out of context and still make sense on their own, and claims a model can attribute to a named author or to data only you hold. The outcome is a citation rather than a position.

Is LLM SEO the same as GEO or AEO?

Largely, yes. Generative engine optimisation, answer engine optimisation and LLM SEO describe the same work from different angles: GEO emphasises the generated answer, AEO emphasises the question being answered, and LLM SEO emphasises the model doing the retrieving. Practitioners use the three interchangeably, and no standards body owns any of them. Pick the term your team already searches for and keep the practice consistent. We publish separate guides for each because buyers search for them separately, not because the work differs.

How do I measure LLM SEO?

Pick the twenty questions a buyer asks before choosing you. Ask each assistant those questions every week in its web-search mode and record whether your domain appears among the cited sources. The share that do is your citation rate. Pair it with Search Console, because both depend on the same retrieval: a page losing impressions is a page at risk of losing its citations. Weekly is the right resolution. Daily readings mostly measure sampling noise rather than any change on your site.

Do I need new content, or can existing pages be optimised?

Start with the pages you have. Most sites already own pages that rank but never get quoted, and the fix is structural rather than a rewrite: state the answer in the first sentence of each section, give every section a heading that repeats the question in the reader's words, define terms in one sentence, add visible published and updated dates, and make sure the facts agree with the rest of the site. Commission new content once the existing pages are quotable, not before.
