The People Also Ask box, and what gets extracted into it
The accordion of related questions inside Google's results. What the box is, how the answers get extracted, why the questions are worth more than the slots, and what one screenshot cannot tell you.
People Also Ask is the expandable list of related questions Google shows inside its search results; each row opens to reveal a short answer extracted from a page, with a link to the page it came from.

What the box is in practice
The People Also Ask box is an accordion of related questions, usually three or four to begin with, sitting inside the ordinary results rather than above them. Click a row and it expands to show a short answer lifted from a page, with that page's title and link underneath. Expanding one row normally appends fresh questions to the bottom of the list, so the set you first see is not the whole set.
Three properties matter more than the layout.
- The answer is extracted, not written to order. Google takes a passage from a page it has already indexed — a paragraph, a list item, a table row — so the wording in the box is your wording.
- The source need not rank first. A page sitting mid page one, or further back, can supply the answer, which is why the box is winnable on queries where the top result is not.
- The set is volatile. Question wording, order and sources shift between runs, devices and days, and the box itself moves up and down the page.
So treat any single screenshot as one sample rather than as your standing in the feature.
A People Also Ask answer is a passage Google extracts from a page it has already indexed, which is why the page that supplies it does not have to be the page ranking first.
Why it matters in 2026
Two things make the box worth attention now.
It is a free readout of question intent. Google is telling you, query by query, which follow-up questions it treats as part of the same information need. That is the raw material a topic cluster is built from, and reading it costs nothing — no tool, just the search you already ran.
It is also a click sink. A question with a short factual answer gets answered in the box, and the searcher often opens the next row rather than your site. In Search Console that tends to look like steady impressions with a falling click-through rate, much the same shape AI Overviews leave behind, and it is easy to misread as a ranking slide.
The strategy follows from those two. Questions with a complete short answer are cheap to be quoted for and poor at earning clicks. Questions whose honest answer starts with "it depends on your building, your budget or your stack" still send people through, because a two-sentence extract cannot finish them. Sort your question list by which kind each one is before deciding what to write.
How this engine uses the questions
The discovery stage pulls SERP data for every target keyword through DataForSEO and reads the site's own Search Console queries, so the questions Google attaches to a keyword arrive with the research rather than being guessed at. They get used two ways: as candidate headings inside an article, when the question genuinely belongs to that page's search intent, and as FAQ entries, which publish with the article's FAQ schema. Answers are written to be liftable — the direct answer first, the qualification after — and grounded in the customer's own product data, datasheets or support answers where that data exists.
Two limits, stated plainly. Nothing here buys a slot: Google decides what to extract, and it changes its mind. And Search Console does not label the feature, so appearances in the box are not something we can read out of your own data; tools that report them scrape the results page instead. What the nightly loop does measure is Search Console performance and whether assistants such as GPT and Perplexity cite your pages, reported separately rather than blended into one number. The mechanics are set out on how it works.
Common misunderstandings
That FAQ schema gets you in. Structured data helps a parser understand the page and is worth having. It is not an entry ticket: the box routinely quotes plain body copy from pages that carry no such markup.
That a slot equals a ranking. Being extracted is a passage-level judgement about one paragraph, not a position, which is why the answer can come from a page well down the results while the pages above it are passed over.
That it is the same as a featured snippet. Both are extracted answers. A featured snippet answers the query you typed and sits at the top; the box answers questions you did not type and sits inside the results. A page can hold one without the other.
That every question deserves a page. Mining a hundred questions and generating a hundred near-identical pages is programmatic SEO at its worst: thin pages competing with each other. Group them into a few pages that genuinely differ.
That one look tells you where you stand. Sets change between runs and locations, so watch a fixed question list over weeks. The free site check is one place to start if you want your own pages looked at first.
questions people ask
How do you get into the People Also Ask box?
There is no submission and no guarantee, so what you control is candidacy. Be crawlable and indexed, put the question on the page as a heading in the wording people actually use, and answer it immediately underneath in two or three plain sentences before you start qualifying anything. Keep that answer self-contained, so it still makes sense lifted out of context. Short lists and small tables are often extracted too. Then give the page a reason to be chosen over the others, which usually means a figure, a specification or an answer only your business can give.
Does FAQ schema put you in People Also Ask?
No. They are separate mechanisms. FAQ markup describes questions and answers to a parser and can help a machine understand your page, but Google extracts these answers from ordinary body copy, including from pages that carry no structured data at all. Add the schema because it is cheap and accurate, not because it buys a slot. What actually decides the extraction is whether a passage on your page answers the question cleanly and can stand alone once it has been lifted away from the paragraphs around it.
Are People Also Ask clicks reported in Search Console?
Not as their own line. Search Console has no search appearance filter for the feature, so a click from the box lands in your ordinary performance data with nothing to distinguish it. Tools that report presence in the box get it by scraping the results page themselves, not from your account. Read the effect indirectly instead: on question queries, watch for impressions holding steady while click-through rate falls, which is the shape a box that answered the question for the searcher tends to leave behind.
Should I write a page for every question in the box?
Usually not. Most sets contain several phrasings of one underlying question, plus a few that belong to a different stage of the buying decision entirely. Turning each into its own page produces thin, overlapping content that competes with itself and dilutes the cluster it sits in. Group them instead: near-duplicates become headings or FAQ entries on one strong page, and only a question with genuinely different intent earns a page of its own. The test is whether you can write two hundred useful words that do not repeat the parent page.
