Surfer SEO vs IT Master: score a draft, or ship a checked page
Surfer scores and guides the draft a person is writing. IT Master writes the draft, has models from another vendor check it, and publishes what passes. Checked against Surfer's public pages on 2 September 2026.

Surfer SEO — Surfer's homepage calls it an “AI Visibility Platform for maximum organic growth”: a Content Editor built round a real-time Content Score, plus the Surfer AI writer, an AI Humanizer, Content Audit, Topical Map and an AI Tracker that follows brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. (their public pages, checked 2026-09-02)
| Dimension | Surfer SEO | IT Master |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A platform your team works inside: Content Editor, Content Audit, Topical Map, AI Tracker and Surfer AI. Two more, Surfy Agent and Surfer MCP, are listed as coming soon. source: surferseo.com | A pipeline that runs without you: it picks the topic, researches, writes, submits the draft to rival models, and publishes the one that passes. |
| Who writes | You, or your freelancer, guided by live term and structure targets. Or Surfer AI drafts from a keyword after you pick a template, tone and organic competitors, on a “GPT-4o engine, with a boosted context size of 128k tokens”. Articles are advertised “as low as $9 with bundles”. source: surferseo.com/ai-article-writer/ | Claude models write from a research dossier the engine assembles. No keyword box to fill and no outline to approve. Four tiers: Lite, Standard, Pro, Premium. |
| Optimisation scoring | Content Score, “a real-time responsive metric that shows you if you're on track for optimization”, with “500+ ranking factors analyzed” against the pages currently ranking, plus live targets for structure, word count and NLP-ready keywords. source: surferseo.com/content-editor/ | No score to chase. A draft is pass or fail on four independent checks, and a fail is revised or dropped rather than nudged over a threshold. |
| Who checks the draft | Inside the Content Editor, a Plagiarism Checker and the Humanizer, which Surfer says “can spot patterns and unnatural language to avoid AI detection”. How its fact-checking works is not published. source: surferseo.com/content-editor/ | Judges from a different vendor than the writer: Gemini and GPT run fact-check, novelty against the ranking competitors, E-E-A-T critique and AI-tell detection, with up to three revision rounds. |
| Sounding human | AI Humanizer rewrites text so it can “bypass AI detection tools”, naming Turnitin, Copyleaks and GPTZero. It supports “only the English language as of today”, and the page grants that “more advanced” detectors might still pick it up. source: surferseo.com/ai-humanizer/ | AI-tell detection is a gate, not a finishing step. A draft that reads as machine-written goes back for revision, and if it still reads that way it does not publish. |
| Topic discovery | Topical Map connects to Google Search Console, analyses “over 500 web and AI signals”, draws a hexagonal coverage map, “auto-refreshes every 14 days” and gives “weekly recommendations on best topics to cover”. source: surferseo.com/topical-map/ | DataForSEO demand data, your own Search Console and forum threads. The engine chooses the next topic and briefs itself, then keeps clusters filled in rather than proposing a list. |
| Grounding in your data | Brand Knowledge is listed on Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind; the Discovery plan does not list it. Brand Spaces are capped at 5 on Pro. source: surferseo.com/pricing/ | Retrieval over your own first-party data where it exists: product records, supplier datasheets, support answers. That is the part of an article a competitor cannot copy from the SERP. |
| Getting onto the site | Integrations with WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful, ChatGPT, Jasper and Zapier. The WordPress one is pitched as “Publish and optimize from Surfer directly in WordPress”. The API “is only available to active users with the API add-on or users on an Enterprise plan”. source: surferseo.com/integrations/ | Passing articles publish themselves with JSON-LD schema, internal links, a hero image and an FAQ, then IndexNow pings the search engines. WordPress plugin, @itmaster/sdk for Next.js, REST pull feed or signed webhook. |
| AI-assistant visibility | AI Tracker follows your prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, reporting visibility score, mention rate, average position, sentiment, citations and share of voice. Standard refreshes weekly; Pro tracks 50 prompts daily and Peace of Mind 100. source: surferseo.com/ai-tracker/ | The nightly loop measures Search Console alongside citations in GPT and Perplexity for your queries, and turns a decaying page into a queued refresh rather than a chart. |
| What you pay for | A subscription metered in documents, billed yearly: Discovery $49/mo for 120 documents, Standard $99 for 360, Pro $182 for the same 360 plus 5 Brand Spaces, Peace of Mind $299 for “Unlimited*” documents under a fair-use policy, Enterprise $999. AI Search Analytics is a separate $158/mo add-on. source: surferseo.com/pricing/ | Published articles, drawn from a prepaid balance, with no subscription. A draft that fails the checks is not charged at the full rate. Current rates are on the pricing page. |

- You have writers, and you want them guided while they work: the Content Editor gives live term, structure and word-count targets while the draft is open.
- A numeric Content Score is how your team agrees a draft is finished, and you want that number in the editor rather than in a report afterwards.
- You need AI Tracker's prompt-level view of ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity with sentiment, which is broader engine coverage than our probe.
- You want to optimise pages you already have as much as write new ones; Content Audit and Topical Map are built for an existing library.
- Your workflow ends at a polished draft in Google Docs or WordPress, and a person decides what publishes and when.
- You do not want to write, review or schedule anything: the engine picks the topic, writes, checks and publishes what passes.
- You want the draft judged by models from a different vendor than the one that wrote it, against your research dossier, rather than scored against competitor term frequency.
- Your articles should be grounded in your own product data, datasheets and support answers, which is content a competitor cannot replicate.
- You would rather pay per published article than subscribe to a document quota you may not use.
- You want publishing, internal linking, schema, indexing pings and the nightly refresh handled, not just the writing.
What Surfer SEO is, in its own words
Surfer's homepage positions it as an “AI Visibility Platform for maximum organic growth”, and sums the workflow up as “One Platform. One Workflow. Full Content Loop.” Four named parts carry that loop.
- Topical Map connects to your Google Search Console, analyses “over 500 web and AI signals”, and draws a hexagonal map of what your site covers and what it does not.
- Content Editor is the piece most people mean by Surfer: you write, and a live Content Score tracks terms, structure and topic coverage against the pages currently ranking.
- Content Audit is pitched at pages you already published, to “Spot weak pages and fix content gaps”.
- AI Tracker watches how your brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity.
Around them sit Surfer AI, an AI Humanizer, a Plagiarism Checker, and integrations with Google Docs, WordPress, Contentful, ChatGPT, Jasper and Zapier. Two more, Surfy Agent and Surfer MCP, are listed as coming soon. All of it checked on 2 September 2026.
Surfer optimises the article a person is writing. IT Master produces the article.
The honest split: a scoring tool needs a writer
This is not a feature-for-feature contest, because the two products sit at different points in the same job.
Surfer's centre of gravity is the draft in front of you. Someone has to open the editor, write eight hundred words, watch the score climb and decide when it is done. Surfer AI shortens that by producing the first pass, but the workflow still assumes a person picks the keyword, the template, the tone and the competitor set, then reads the result.
IT Master removes the person from the middle. The engine takes demand data, chooses a topic, assembles a research dossier from competitor pages, first-party data and forums, writes, and files the finished post on your site.
So the real question is not which tool scores better. It is whether you have someone to do the writing. If you do, and you want their output sharper, Surfer's editor is the safer purchase. If you do not, a scoring tool has nothing to score.
How each one checks the work
Surfer's pre-publication checks are the Plagiarism Checker and the Humanizer in the Content Editor, plus Surfer AI's own generation pass, which the product page describes as fact-checking and analysing “over 300k words worth of information”. The method behind that fact-check is not published. The Content Score is a coverage metric: it tells you the article resembles what ranks, not that the article is true.
IT Master's gate is separate from the writing and run by other vendors. Claude writes; Gemini and GPT judge. Four checks run in parallel: fact-check against the sources, novelty measured against the pages already ranking, an E-E-A-T critique, and AI-tell detection. A failure returns specific fixes and the article is rewritten, up to three rounds, then judged again.
The rule underneath is simple: the model that writes is never the model that checks. A writer marking its own homework agrees with itself. Pro-tier judges are stricter: 25% first-pass, across a small sample of 16 runs.
Across 186 Standard-tier runs, 51% of drafts passed every check first time; the rest were revised or rejected.
Humanising after the fact, or failing the draft
Surfer's answer to AI detection is the Humanizer, which rewrites generated text so it can “bypass AI detection tools”; the page names Turnitin, Copyleaks and GPTZero. The page is candid about the limits: it supports “only the English language as of today”, and “less advanced detectors might not pick up an article written using an AI humanizer, but more advanced ones might”.
IT Master treats the same problem earlier. AI-tell detection is one of the four gates, run by a model that did not write the draft, and it looks for the tells a reader notices: the throat-clearing intro, the three-item list that says nothing, the paragraph that restates the heading. A draft that trips it is revised with named fixes rather than paraphrased afterwards.
The practical difference is what happens to a bad article. A humanizer changes its surface. A gate stops it. Neither approach is a claim about detector scores, and nobody should promise those.
Research, grounding and what a competitor cannot copy
Both products start from the SERP. Surfer reverse-engineers the pages that rank and turns them into term and structure targets; the Topical Map adds Search Console data and auto-refreshes every 14 days. That is a solid map of what everybody else has already said.
A page built only from that map is, by construction, a better-organised version of the consensus. It is also copyable: your competitor can run the same tool on the same keyword.
IT Master adds a layer that is not on the internet. Where you hold first-party data, it is retrieved and used: product specifications, supplier datasheets, the answers your support inbox gives every week. On a UK CCTV site such as cctvmaster.co.uk that means camera specifications and installation answers that exist inside the business, not in the top ten. Surfer's lighter version of the same idea is Brand Knowledge, listed from the Standard plan up, plus the custom knowledge you add at the Surfer AI outline step.
A brief built only from competitor pages produces a better version of what everyone already published.
Publishing, indexing and the nightly loop
Surfer's WordPress integration is pitched as “Publish and optimize from Surfer directly in WordPress—export drafts and posts without copy-pasting”, and Google Docs, Contentful, ChatGPT, Jasper and Zapier are supported. The API “is only available to active users with the API add-on or users on an Enterprise plan”. In each case a person decides what goes out and when.
IT Master finishes the job. An article that passes is published through the WordPress plugin, @itmaster/sdk for Next.js, a REST pull feed or a signed webhook, carrying JSON-LD schema, internal links into the cluster, a hero image and an FAQ block. IndexNow then pings the search engines. Shopify and Webflow are set up by us on request; Wix and Squarespace get a copy-paste queue.
Afterwards the nightly loop reads Search Console, checks whether GPT and Perplexity cite your pages, and queues a refresh for anything decaying.
A document allowance, or a published article
Surfer sells plans and document allowances. Checked on their pricing page on 2 September 2026, and billed yearly, that is Discovery at $49 a month for 120 documents, Standard at $99 for 360, Pro at $182 for the same 360 documents plus five Brand Spaces, Peace of Mind at $299 for “Unlimited*” documents under a fair-use policy, and Enterprise at $999. AI Search Analytics is a separate add-on at $158 a month. Your writers' time sits on top of all of it.
IT Master bills per published article from a prepaid balance, with no subscription, and a draft that fails the checks is not charged at the full rate. See pricing for current rates.
The distinction that matters at budget time: an allowance is capacity you may not use, and a per-article rate is a cost that only appears when something is live on your site.
An allowance is capacity you might not use. A per-article rate is a cost that appears only when a page is live.
Running both
Plenty of teams should. The two products barely overlap in what they physically do.
A sensible split: IT Master produces net-new articles across the clusters you have not covered, publishes them and keeps them refreshed. Surfer's Content Audit and Content Editor go to work on the pages that predate the engine, on the commercial pages nobody wants an engine touching, and on anything a specialist is writing by hand.
If you want a read on where you stand before choosing either, the free site check looks at what is published now, and the AI Visibility Checker reports whether assistants mention you for your own queries. Surfer's Keyword Surfer extension and AI Detector are free as well.
One caution about buying both: two systems writing to the same site, with no agreement on which owns a URL, produces duplicate coverage. Decide the boundary by cluster before you start.
questions people ask
Is IT Master a Surfer SEO alternative?
Only for part of the job. Surfer scores and improves a draft that a person or its own writer produces. IT Master is not an editor: it chooses topics from search demand, writes the article, has models from a different vendor fact-check it, score its novelty against ranking pages and hunt for AI tells, then publishes the version that passes. If your problem is that drafts are not good enough, buy Surfer. If your problem is that no drafts exist because nobody is writing them, an engine is the closer fit.
Does IT Master give me a content score like Surfer's?
No, and that is deliberate. A content score measures how closely a draft resembles the pages already ranking, which is useful guidance for a writer and a poor gate for a machine, because a model can always add the missing terms without adding meaning. IT Master uses pass or fail checks instead: fact-check, novelty against competitors, an E-E-A-T critique and AI-tell detection, each run by a model that did not write the draft. Across 186 Standard-tier runs, 51% of drafts passed every check first time; the rest were revised or rejected.
Does IT Master humanise its articles the way Surfer's Humanizer does?
It works the other way round. Surfer's Humanizer rewrites finished text to get past detectors, and its own page notes that more advanced detectors might still catch it. IT Master runs AI-tell detection as one of four gates before publication, using a model that did not write the draft, and sends failures back for revision with specific fixes. Nobody should promise a particular detector score, ours included. The aim is prose a human editor would not flag, achieved by rejecting weak drafts rather than paraphrasing them afterwards.
What does Surfer SEO cost?
Checked on their pricing page on 2 September 2026, and billed yearly, the plans are Discovery at $49 a month for 120 documents, Standard at $99 for 360 documents, Pro at $182 for the same 360 plus five Brand Spaces, Peace of Mind at $299 for unlimited documents under a fair-use policy, and Enterprise at $999 a month. AI Search Analytics is sold separately at $158 a month. Verify on surferseo.com before buying, since prices change. IT Master charges per published article from a prepaid balance, with no subscription.
Can I use Surfer and IT Master together?
Yes, and for many teams that is the right answer. Let the engine produce and publish net-new articles across clusters you do not cover, and point Surfer's Content Audit and Content Editor at the legacy pages, the commercial pages you want a human shaping, and anything a specialist writes by hand. The one rule is to divide ownership by cluster or URL before you start. Two systems editing the same pages with no agreed boundary creates duplicate coverage and conflicting internal links, which costs more to untangle than either tool saves.
Who is accountable for what IT Master publishes?
Rodd Azad, a software engineer and the founder of IT Master and code-nest.dev, is Editor-in-Chief. The engine is run as an editorial operation: every draft is judged by models from a vendor other than the one that wrote it, and only a draft that clears fact-check, novelty, E-E-A-T and AI-tell detection reaches your site. Live tenants include cctvline.co.uk and cctvmaster.co.uk in UK CCTV retail and trade, eurocctv.co.uk in UK CCTV trade, and 1xai.ir in Persian-language AI developer tools.
